David Nehring

Executive Director, President

Degree: Ph.D.

Certification: Licensed Psychologist

Areas of Specialization: Reconciliation, forgiveness and repentance. Psychological integrity and wholeness and its relationship to moral and ethical integrity; Personal integrity; Family and community relationships; Marriage and Family counseling; Counseling with men; Cross-cultural development psychology; Identity and meaning; Masculine psychology, psychology of paternity; Extended family systems; Church functioning and family dynamics, cultural and religious identification.

My view of therapy: My approach is to get to know the client and how she or he understands their struggle, understands him or herself, and how they understand relationships with others. I listen not just to what they say, however, but watch what they do, trying to meet them where they are at. This is especially the case in marriages and families where, despite their love for each other, loved ones deeply misunderstanding one another. I try to help them understand each other better and how to love one another more effectively. Change occurs as clients come to a new understanding of who they are and how their relationships happen.

For clients who are Christian there is an added dimension. For them we explore together what the Word teaches about God, helping them understand how trusting the Lord defines and transforms all relationships. With these clients, it's not just about how they understand themselves, the world, and relationships, but also how they understand the Word, who they are in light of the Word, and, most importantly, Who God Is, really, practically, in life. For the Christian client their relationship with God and how it changes life becomes central to how they understand their problem. Change happens as the client re-experiences and comes to a new understanding of how God shows himself in relationships, in reality, and in life.

Ruth L. Kooiman
Licensed Psychologist
Degree: MS

Certification: Licensed Psychologist

Areas of Specialization: Depression, Anxiety/Panic Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders, Adjustment Disorders, Individual Concerns such as: Self-esteem, Grief and Loss Issues, Assertiveness, Individuation, Problem Ownership, Self-responsibility, and Spiritual dilemmas, Relationship Issues including: Communication Skills, Caretaking, Boundary Setting, Sexual Issues, Family and Life Transition Difficulties like: Marital Conflict, Infidelity, Parenting, Stress Management, Women's Issues, Counseling (and Psychoeducation) for Individuals, Couples, Families, and Groups

View of Therapy: I believe that people come to therapy because what they have already tried isn't working and they know they need to try something different. Each client is viewed as a whole person who is made up of social, spiritual, emotional, thinking, and physical parts. People have the potential within themselves to change; however, because of difficulties and issues they have experienced in their lives they are sometimes unable to change in a positive way unassisted. Working together, we discover and use client strengths to address and resolve issues from the past that continue to cause problems or pain in the present. We examine their current ways of thinking, behaving, and feeling. Where needed, we develop, implement, and build upon newer, more appropriate solutions, skills, and strategies for them to use. Emphasis is on building healthy relationships with self and others, and upon making good choices in resolving current and future difficulties using both cognitive-behavioral and rational-emotive approaches.

Dale Ellens

Church Relations Coordinator

Degrees: M. Div., M.S.

Purpose: At Bethesda Christian Counselling, we have always sought to come along side pastors and churches to provide an adjunct healing ministry that aids in the further enhancement of grace-based marriages, families, congregations and lives as we, together, advance the Kingdom of God. In keeping with this purpose my work involves regular visits to pastors and church leaders. Bethesda seeks to remain relevant to the needs of pastors and churches as we provide services related to mental health counselling, marriage and family counselling, pastoral education and church health ministries. My role is to listen to what pastors and church leaders are saying concerning their most significant challenges. I share these themes with the staff at Bethesda so that we can always adjust and enhance our services and delivery model in a way this is most advantageous to churches. My purpose is, also, to educate pastors and church leaders on the wide range of services offered to them by Bethesda. As one who has, myself, served as pastor of a church, I understand and appreciate the significant demands faced by pastors, full time ministry staffs, and church leaders. I, also, meet with deacon boards of supporting churches to educate them on the reason Bethesda seeks their annual benevolent financial support. As an ordained minister in the Christian Reformed Church, I am available to Christian churches of any denomination, located within our service delivery area, to provide regular Sunday preaching and pulpit supply.
